Gary Thompson is getting set to make his car racing debut in the 2009 Formula BMW Pacific series on the support bill of the Malaysian Grand Prix next weekend.
Thompson has shown promise in testing with the Malaysian based E-Rain Motorsport squad and is looking forward to his first season out of karts in the important BMW factory supported single-seater development category.
The 16-year-old from Donabate, County Dublin will be the first Irish driver to race in the Formula BMW Pacific series and following a strong winter testing programme is confident that he can make his mark as the season progresses.
I’m really looking forward to this season,” said the Aviation Display supported driver. “The main goal is to gain experience and put myself in a position to score podium finishes.
“If I can do that this weekend then that would be great but the main aim is to get plenty of racing laps in and hopefully come away with some points. Testing has gone well and I’m prepared and focused. It’ll be fun!”
This year’s Formula BMW Pacific series takes in events at Formula One Grands Prix in Malaysia, and Singapore as well as events in Japan, Indonesia and the world famous Macau Grand Prix festival.
Thompson will also take part in events counting for the Formula BMW Europe series at the British and Belgian Grands Prix when he will drive for the Raikkonen Roberston team.
